Hong Kong-based press: publishes local and international authors, administers two annual international literary prizes for work submitted in English: the Proverse Prize for unpublished book-length fiction, non-fiction or poetry (founded 2008), and the Proverse Poetry Prize (single poems) (founded 2016). Publishes selected work entered for the Poetry Prize (single poems) in an annual anthology series, Mingled Voices. Holds two annual literary events to launch books, announce and/or award prizes, showcase poets and writers. Youtube channel <https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxMvyKOp7o4MWQvsIN0FdWQ> extends life and range of Proverse events as well as separately published readings by Proverse writers and poets. Photos of most Proverse events are available on the Proverse website, proversepublishing.com.
A proportion of titles have received publication support from various cultural bodies. Various Hong Kong institutions support the work of Proverse by inviting their poets and authors to give readings and presentations. Consular heads of mission and other consular representatives regularly attend Proverse functions to support writers in whom they have an interest.
Of the titles published by Proverse, several have attracted a Preface or advance appreciation from figures of international reputation, most notably perhaps, from Václav Havel (for the English translation of Olga Wallό’s Tightrope: A Bohemian Tale). Two titles (Peter Gregoire’s, Article 109 and The Devil You Know) were best sellers at Dymocks Hong Kong. The publication by Proverse of the late Sophronia Liu’s book, A Shimmering Sea, was a major argument in the award to Sophronia of a posthumous PhD at the University of Minnesota. Other writers published by Proverse have also benefited in their literary careers, a couple of them taking a leadership role in local literary groups.
Proverse books are available internationally as well as locally, including through the Chinese University of Hong Kong Press as distributors (https://cup.cuhk.edu.hk/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_68_171), and online retailers. There are copies in many university and public libraries world-wide.
Apart from encouraging writing, the publishers have on more than one occasion administered Reading Development Grants awarded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
